Strong Earthquake Hits Nepal and India; 20 People Dead, Over 100 Injured
A strong earthquake measuring 6.9 moment magnitude (Mw) rocked north east of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. The quake claimed at least 20 lives, 15 in India and 5 in Nepal, and injured over100 people. Strong tremors were felt in Nepal on Sunday evening, at 6:25 pm. This is the strongest quake hit the country in 78 years. Accord U.S. Geological Survery (USGS) and National Seismological Center, Nepal, the epicenter was between Taplejung, eastern Nepal, and the Indian state of Sikkim (27.723°N, 88.064°E). The hypocenter (earthquake focus) was shallow (20 km) and located north east of Ghunsa village, Taplejung.
Among the five death reported in Nepal, three people died in Kathmandu after the compound wall of the British Embassy at Lainchaur collapsed in the aftermath of the quake, and two died in Dharan when the ceiling of their house fell down. Fifteen people died in north east areas of India, including two army personnel. Hundreds of people have been injured both in India and Nepal. Major damages have been reported from Gantok, Sikkim. The quake damaged buildings, affected transportation network, power supply, and mobile and telephone networks.
This is not a typical Himalayan earthquake! Be Careful...
According to technical details available in USGS website, this earthquake is not a typical Himilayan earthquake. The earthquake was generated by strike slip fault rather than a typical thrust interface plate boundary between upper Eurasian plate or the underlying India plate.In a Facebook group, Dr. Subesh Ghimire indicated that due to the different earthquake mechanism involved in this quake, the future prediction of earthquake based on seismic gap in Nepal could be still valid and pose a threat in near future.

Dharmashila Chapagai, 2011 High Level Meeting on AIDS, 94th Plenary Meeting
What a disastrous speech!!! Watch how Mrs. Dharmashila Chapagai, State Minister for Health and Population of Nepal delivered speech at the 2011 High Level Meeting on AIDS, New York, 8-10 June 2011. She is trying to read a written speech in English language with all her best but unable to do it properly. I don't mean this blog post to ridicule on her English language skill because English is not our mother tongue. But, the issue is, if she can't read English then why she is doing this in front of international community. She should have chosen Nepali language instead. It is pretty clear that she didn't know what she was talking about. She is reading totally different words with different meanings, for example she read "republic health" instead of reproductive health. What a funny! Don't pretend, if you can't do it. You are embarrassing Nepalese, your party, and making a fool yourself...
Who is Dharmashila Adhikari?
Dharmashila Adhikari is a member of the Constitution
Assembly (CA) from Jhapa district constituency number 4 representing Unified
Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist). In April 2008, she was elected
in the CA with 19,289 votes defeating Chakra Prasad Bastola, a contestant from
Nepali Congress party.
